Movies and their larger-than-life stars have enthralled and entertained the world for over 100 years. These cinematic spectacles, however, have evolved into much more than mere diversion. Film historians spend countless hours studying movies and their effects on the viewing public. They compile “Top 100” lists in order to catalogue the industry's best and worst; and, they debate over issues concerning which films qualify as “classic” and how each has affected the development of world cinema. Certain movies have become a part of our culture and everyday life. James Bond movies, for example, have introduced new phrases into the common lexicon while other movies (like Christmas movies) become part of the family – they bring us warmth and memories of love. The ability to buy or rent VHS movies and DVDs for home viewing allows us to develop even more intimate connections to our favorite films.
