Nagra - Professional Audio and High end HiFi

Description

In the world of sound recording, the Switzerland-based company Nagra established the benchmark for audio recording devices for both journalistic and cinematic applications. Introduced by Stefan Kudelski in 1951, the first Nagra was a small, lightweight, durable sound recorder geared toward radio journalists and reporters working in the field. Kudelski’s first customers were Radio Lausanne and Radio Geneva.

Kudelski introduced the Nagra III in 1958, selling 240 units in that year alone. In 1959, the Italian broadcasting company RAI ordered 100 units for use during the Olympic Games in Rome. The Nagra III had the capability of synchronized sound with film. By the early 1960s, it had become the standard in the film industry, embraced by major film studios. Customers also included such major broadcasters as ABC, NBC, CBS, and BBC. Conforming to the typical image of a portable audio recorder, particularly in terms of its reel-to-reel tape deck, the Nagra can be seen in many films, including Help!, the Beatles’ second film.

The Nagra remains highly regarded by sound engineers and has adapted to developing digital technologies. It continues to be prized for its quality of sound and its sophisticated technology. Currently, Nagra offers digital recording devices for broadcasting, cinematic, and music-recording applications, as well as a wide range of high-quality products for audiophiles. These products include CD players, vacuum tube pre-amplifiers, power amplifiers, and pyramid stereo amplifiers. In the last decade, the company has diversified, and it now offers a wide range of security, monitoring, and digital interactive television products.

Stefan Kudelski was born in 1929 in Warsaw, Poland. His family fled Poland in the wake of the Nazi invasion and eventually settled in Switzerland. Kudelski studied engineering at École Polytechnique de l’Université de Lausanne (currently École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), a Swiss federal institute of technology, until 1948. At that time, he left school to focus on manufacturing the Nagra. The Polish word “nagra” translates as “will record.”
