Title

Village Voice Media -- villagevoicemedia.com | Publisher of Alternative Newsweeklies

Description

Since its founding in 1970, New Times has grown to become the largest group of metropolitan newsweeklies in the U.S. Our papers routinely best America's major dailies in national and regional writing competitions. And we make a difference in our communities, by breaking news, by taking the time to interpret it, and by offering readers a weekly respite from the hurried fact-finding of daily journalism. A growth-oriented company with an interest in major American markets, New Times publishes papers in eleven of the country's most vibrant cities.

The company started in Phoenix, where writers at its flagship paper, Phoenix New Times, have won the Arizona Press Club's Journalist of the Year Award eight out of the past eleven years. In 1983, the company acquired Westword, a then-six-year-old paper in Denver that today serves as an indispensable journalistic voice in one of the nation's fastest-growing urban areas. Four years later, New Times moved into Florida, where it now publishes papers in both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Texas was the next stop in the early 1990s, when the company acquired the Dallas Observer and the Houston Press. In the mid-'90s, New Times entered the California market, purchasing SF Weekly of San Francisco. As the decade came to a close, the company strengthened its position in the Midwest, purchasing the respected Riverfront Times of St. Louis and PitchWeekly of Kansas City. It also repositioned Cleveland's Scene from a music paper to a true journalistic force in that revitalized regional center. And, most recently, New Times acquired the East Bay Express, a well-respected weekly serving Oakland, Berkeley and other East Bay communities. New Times also owns and operates the Ruxton Group, which sells advertising for 28 newsweeklies in major metropolitan markets.

Though many of the nation's alternative weeklies continue to be known for their agenda-driven approach to news, New Times has prospered by remaining true to a different vision. The chain was founded by students at Arizona State University irate over the Vietnam-era shootings at Kent State University. But from the beginning it emphasized strong writing and solid reporting of local issues. That commitment to journalistic fundamentals has only deepened over the years. As many daily papers shorten stories and hire consultants to tell them what to print, New Times papers thrive by cultivating networks of local sources, generating truly original story ideas, and digging into stories rather than skating across their surface.
