About Us
Established in 1983, Northern Vineyards Winery is owned by the members of the Minnesota Winegrowers Cooperative. Members of the cooperative own and operate the vineyards that produce the grapes for Northern Vineyards. The vineyards are scattered throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin (see our map).
Minneapolis/St. Paul lie on the same line of latitude (45 degrees N) as the Bordeaux region of France and several hundred miles south of the Rheingau region of Germany. As the summers are warm, sunny, and recipients of ample rainfall, parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin are quite suitable for grapevines especially in the rolling hills and bluffs along the rivers and lakes. But unlike Europe, Minnesota has a continental climate. Early autumn frosts and long winters shorten the growing season here. Therefore, we choose our grapes carefully, being mindful of our need for cold-hardy vines.
For over 50 years, Wisconsin horticulturalist Elmer Swenson has dedicated his work to the breeding of grape varieties that can adapt to the rigor of our climate. Seven of these varieties have been patented and released to cold climate grape growers. At Northern Vineyards we use the Swenson varieties of Edelweiss, St. Pepin, and LaCrosse to make white wines. Swenson's St. Croix makes an earthy, full-bodied varietal red wine.
