- The Pecos Wilderness is at the southernmost end of the thousand-mile-long U.S. Rocky Mountains in the Santa Fe National Forest. This general area is called the Southern Sangre De Cristo Mountains. The upper Pecos high country is named for the Pecos River, one of the great rivers of New Mexico, which heads in this region. This area was declared a National Forest Wilderness in 1955 and covers 223,667 acres.
