For several years now we've been working with the Ruby language although it was considered an "alternative". We found that it allowed us to write more "literate" code, which made change easier, and understanding clearer, which in turn made projects more successful. Over the last year a framework called "Rails" (written in Ruby) has gained a tremendous following and "buzz". We develop products in Rails as part of our consultancy. It's not the only tool in our bag, we build and manage projects that are not web applicaitons. Even within that sphere, it's not the only solution we employ. But it is one that we love to use, and enjoy more than most.
