About Storytelling

Storytelling grew out of the playful, self-entertainment needs of humans when gifted but ordinary folk would informally entertain their particular social group. It evolved from the human desire to communicate experience to others and satisfied the need to explain the surrounding physical world as well as honouring the supernatural forces believed to be present there. It fulfilled an aesthetic desire for beauty, regularity and form through expressive language and music and was used to record the actions or qualities of one's ancestors, in the belief that this would give them a kind of immortality.

These activities were gradually included in the more formal settings of religious rituals, historical recitations and educational functions. Most cultures from around the world have a tradition of storytelling, and historical records of it are found in many languages. References are made to storytelling in the Westcar Papyrus of the Egyptians (where the sons of Cheops the pyramid builder entertain their father with stories) and the ancient Summerian story of Gilgamesh is often cited as the oldest surviving epic.
