Description
In the 1960's, extra-marital pregnancies had begun to increase significantly as a result of changing sexual behavior. More and more women were turning to abortion as a "solution" to the problem, and some people began to work toward the repeal of laws against abortion. In other words, the only solution that seemed to be sought for women in crisis pregnancies was to give them permission to kill their children. Louise Summerhill, of Toronto, Canada, wanted to offer women help to HAVE their babies, to continue their pregnancies in an atmosphere of acceptance rather than condemnation. She founded Birthright International in 1968. Other centers followed, all having the common goal to offer women the information, practical help, and emotional support they needed to be able to choose to reject the temptation to abort and make a positive choice for life.
Today there are approximately 3000 pregnancy help centers in the U. S. Although public attitudes toward single mothers have become more accepting, abortion is also more accepted as a practical means of dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Thousands of women have benefited from the facts and friendship, provided by pregnancy center volunteers, which helped them to reject abortion and choose life for their children.
The Pregnancy Resource Center of Fort Bend County was originally founded as Birthright of Rosenberg/Richmond in 1981, by several ladies from Holy Rosary Catholic church in Rosenberg. Dolores Wolff was the original director. In 1983 there were 80 pregnancy tests done, and a total of 136 office visits to our Ave H location. Our annual budget was about $3,000. We later moved to the Fort Bend Office Park in Richmond. In 1998 we discontinued our affiliation with Birthright International and changed our name to Pregnancy Resource Center of Fort Bend County. We are now affiliated with Heartbeat International. In 1999 we moved to our present location in Suite 10 of Chamber Plaza, 4203 Ave H in Rosenberg. In our 2001-2002 fiscal year we served 1,144 clients, including 166 women who were considering abortion. Our expenses totaled about $60,000, and our income was over $64,000.
