Research Centre for Forest Ecology and Environment (RCFEE) is a research-based institution working independently under Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV). Since its establishment in 1990, the centre has significantly contributed to the academic research in forestry sectors and provided practical knowledge to forest management and development. The challenge At the very beginning of the new millenium, we have seen a lot of large-scale natural disaster: the effect of global warming, the threaten of desertification, the deadly storm and flash flooding, and the overall degradation of the environment of our planet. All of these problems are inter-linked and have cause/effect relationship with some aspect of forest ecology system.
In the context of Vietnam, after a century long of war, the whole country is now in a race for economics development. The pressure on forest resource is higher than ever before. The forest cover has been decreased from 43 per cent in 1943 to 28 per cent in 1995. There is also a trend of quality degradation in natural forest and unsustainable productivity of plantation. Throughout the country, some 10 million ha of forest are now under a range of secondary succession types in various stages of degradation and recovery.
In the last 10 years, Vietnamese government has launched several very large-scale forest rehabilitation programs. The main objectives of those programs are to conserve natural forest through assisted natural regeneration; and improve forest production through forest plantation project. In order to successfully implement these program a broad and comprehensive knowledge base is required: from scientific understand of forest ecology, soil nutrient cycling, forest silviculture management to social-economic aspect of land use planning.
It is the challenge and also opportunity that the RCFEE willing to take in order to meet our final target: for the optimal use of the forest resources for Vietnam economic development while keeping it sustainable for our next generations.
Mission RCFEE mission is to address current issue in forestry sector, predict threats in the future and develop solutions for such problems. Through targeted investment in science and prioritization in research, our aim is to ensure our scientific work delivers maximum benefit on the most important issue facing our partner in forestry sector.
Research and Development RCFEE’s strategic research and development (R&D) program is focused around three central themes:
* Sustainable use of forest and forest land * Forest ecology and physiology * Forest environment modeling, prediction and assessment.
These themes reflect major trend in Vietnam’s forest industry such as critical need of protecting and improving quality of natural forest, high demand on plantation product, changing in climate phenomenon regarding forest hydrology, and clean development mechanism.
