SCSSD was established in 2002 and began active operations in March of 2003. In 2001, the three sports venue operators — Comcast-Spectacor, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Philadelphia Eagles — committed a combined $1 million annual contribution (with annual CPI adjustment) to fully fund SCSSD efforts and address the unique needs of South Philadelphia residents living in close proximity to an active, world-class Sports Complex. SCSSD is the only such district in the nation created for community benefit and financed entirely by local sports teams.
