Description

The mission of the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara Valley is to improve the lives of those affected by diabetes through education, advocacy, and support services. Our mission differs from national diabetes organizations such as the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), whose primary goal is research and finding a cure.

Although the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara Valley is a local organization, our diabetes education services are nationally recognized and our camp program is the largest, most diverse in the United States. ADA accredited education services include group and individual sessions that help people to better manage their diabetes. In addition, a number of Diabetes Society peer support groups -- teens, parents, pump users, etc. -- meet monthly to discuss relevant topics and concerns. The innovative camping program offers a variety of activities throughout California, including family, teen and day camps ranging from one day to two weeks in length. The Central California camping program is supported by a generous ongoing grant from the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation.

The Diabetes Society provides services to everyone -- including those who do not have health insurance. Thanks to a hard-working staff and committed volunteers, over 83% of our $2 million operating budget goes directly to support our mission. However, even this is not enough to keep pace with the dramatic increase in the incidence of diabetes. The Diabetes Society needs additional support from grants, trusts, and corporate and private donations so that we will be able to adequately serve the rapidly growing number of people affected by diabetes.
