The Mission

"Sites and Photos" has set out to answer the great demand for an organized documentation of archaeological sites. Our main mission is to provide scholars with one of the world's most comprehensive archives of digital photography pertaining to Mediterranean archaeology.

In a thorough and extensive endeavor that has now reached its 10th year, we have created an enormous bank of some 80,000 high resolution digital photographs and more than 22 hours of digital videos of hundreds of archaeological sites from all historical periods. To maintain scientific accuracy the sites were photographed and filmed by our own certified archaeologist and photographer.

Intensive cataloguing work that divides our archive into multiple categories (locations, architecture, museums, burials etc.) means that you can readily access our archive and focus your searches in a mere matter of moments. At your disposal are tools that will help you save your searches and information and then in the future have the option of bringing them up for presentations or future reference.

M. Samuel

The Sites and Photos vision was initiated by M. Samuel, a certified archaeologist specializing in Classical and Marine Archaeology. In 1998 he was awarded his degree in Archaeology from Haifa University, Israel. His field experience includes participation in several excavations on land and underwater in multiple Mediterranean countries. During his time as a student he came to realize how limited the photographed documentation of archaeological sites and monuments was. The archival material was often incomplete and outdated. As a result, he set out to document, film and photograph as many sites as possible for generations to come, before they disappeared forever at the hands of man and time. Since 1999 he has traveled to dozens of excursions archiving hundreds of Mediterranean archaeological sites and museums. His effort and devotion have led to the compilation of a vast archive of images and videos pertaining to archaeology, history and ancient arts. In 2005 he was joined by Reut Ltd., a leading software and internet company in Israel. Together they have created the amazing online resource you visit today - "Sites and Photos".

Today Samuel is the head researcher and archivist of Sites and Photos. He performs all the photography and filming and supervises the meticulous cataloguing work with utmost attention to scientific accuracy and the high standards he has come to learn and develop as an accredited archaeologist.
