How the Auckland Sunday School Union came into being.
In the 1860s the Wellesley Street Baptist Church (now the Tabernacle) was advised that there were undelivered packages for "Superintendent, Sunday School , New Zealand ." The packages were given to the Baptist Church . The parcels turned out to be reports sent out each year by the London Sunday School Union. The reports were read keenly and it sparked the idea of uniting people engaged in Sunday school work in Auckland . By 1864 Sunday School teacher's meetings in Auckland were discussing the idea of forming a group or union. Six schools agreed to go ahead and in 1865 the Sunday School Union was launched and underway.
