The name of Stukwerkers goes back to the year 1338, when permission was granted to the labourers, associated under that name, to load and unload boats on the rivers Lieve, Lys, Escaut and the Sas and Bruges canals. As such, Stukwerkers can be considered as the oldest stevedoring company in the Port of Ghent, and is certainly amongst the oldest in Europe. Throughout the centuries, the Stukwerkers continued as a guild of dock-labourers in the Port of Ghent.
