- We would like to share a few quick facts about Sumpter you might find interesting if you've got a few minutes to spare today! You'll find Sumpter tucked away in the Wallowa Whitman Forest in the beautiful Elkhorn Mountains. Local folks call this God's Country! We aren't too hard to find if you've made it to Baker City-just another 27 miles or so following Highway 7 out through South Baker City. If you're exploring Eastern Oregon and driving through John Day and Prairie City, you'll come to us from out on Highway 26. Of course, if you're following the breathtaking Elkhorn Scenic Byway, you'll drive right through Sumpter! As for life here in our sleepy, historic gold town, Sumpter Oregon is quiet and peaceful most of the year. We do have our busy moments though! The famous Sumpter Flea Markets brings thousands of visitors to Sumpter three times a year! The Snowmobile Poker Run is another annual event that makes Sumpter famous and fills our town with lots of visitors and festive fun in the winter!
