Ummmmm, Matt? Is Googlebot tying to send me some sort of secret message here? All kidding aside, I saw something interesting recently. I was looking to see if Googlebot had come by one particular page of a site. So I logged into the server and grepped the access log for ‘googlebot’.
The picture you see here is the result of that grep. This is really interesting. Is it coincidence that Googlebot requested pages in order by the length of the URI? Subsequent crawls didn’t fetch pages in that manner, but I sure found that log file interesting! It was almost as if Googlebot was trying to paint a picture in the negative space or perhaps send me some sort of coded secret message.
A question I’m frequently asked these days is “What is the difference between a blog and a website?” I’m having an increasingly difficult time answering that question. Not because I don’t have some semblance of an answer, but rather I’m making a personal push to get away from using the word blog.
