Loving and respecting the great nature of the Yukon was an important part of starting a trail riding business for Rolf and Ingrid Schmitt.
The couple emigrated in 1999 and instantly fell in love with a beautiful 136-acre property on the Takhini River, just 20 minutes north of Whitehorse. Complete with hay fields, fences and a house, they knew it presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
A very tough part was learning the thousands of miles of trails in the Miners Range mountains, which lies nearby between the Yukon River and the Old Dawson Trail. The Schmitt's long-time neighbours knew the trails but they weren't going to share their wealth of knowledge until the couple had proven themselves. That's what Yukon time is all about, people come and go but the ancient secrets of the land are only for the few that put out the effort.
