United Technologies Corporation is a multinational conglomerate manufacturer, involved in the research, development, and manufacture of products within the building and aerospace industries. They were founded in 1929 in Hartford, Connecticut.

Business Units

Because United Technology Corporation is a conglomerate, they are actually a number of independent business functioning as "business units", rather than subsidiaries or brands. The business units of United Technologies are separately:

  • Carrier - environment systems
  • Hamilton Sundstrand - aerospace
  • Otis - transport systems
  • Pratt & Whitney - aerospace
  • Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation - helicopters
  • UTC Fire & Security - fire and security
  • UTC Power Corporation - generators and fuel cells

Most of these units also own subsidiary companies of their own.

In addition, the conglomerate also runs the United Technologies Research Center, whose role it is to serve as a research facility for all of the other business units.

Between all of the above units, their product lines span elevators to rockets to refrigeration systems. The key word here is "big" - with a few minor exceptions for the Carrier air conditioning company, none of their products would be typically purchased by an end-point consumer. Instead, their customers would typically be the Air Force, NASA, the New York subway system, amusement parks, and other large industry scale clients.

Products

A small sampling of the products produced by the individual units would include:

  • Propellers for a U.S. Navy E-2C Hawkeye plane.
  • Primary life-support system for the EMU spacesuit used by NASA.
  • The elevator for the "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror" thrill ride at Walt Disney World.
  • Fixed gas turbines for industry and power generation.
  • Railway locomotive engines.
  • The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter for the United States Army.
  • Electronic locks for a bank vault.
  • Fuel cells for NASA's Space Shuttle missions.

This list should present some idea of what the conglomerate is for and why it makes sense for one company to have so many interests.

History

The conglomerate has evolved over time from various acquisitions, partnerships, mergers, and sales. The various corporation's histories are thus very diverse and scattered throughout time.

Briefly, the core of the company starts in 1929 at the merger of Boeing, Chance Vought, Hamilton Standard, Pratt & Whitney, and Sikorsky Aircraft. This company was named "United Aircraft and Transport Corporation", however parts of the original Boeing split off as Boeing and United Airlines, leaving United Aircraft the portion remaining with the company. The corporation continued to focus on aerospace and defense industries through the rest of the 20th century.

In 1975, The company changed its name to United Technologies. Soon afterward, they acquired Otis elevator and Carrier refrigeration. Some decades later, they also acquired the companies Sundstrand, Chubb Security, Kidde, Rocketdyne.
