- Brian Stearns, the president of Vermont Slate & Copper Services, Inc. got his start in the slate roofing business in a somewhat unconventional way. His start in the business was not via the usual apprenticeship or training program or even working in the summer for the local roofing company. Rather, his then high school teacher asked Brian one summer, to help find and purchase used roofing slate that many Vermont farmers had tucked away somewhere on their property. The original intent was to find enough used slate to re-roof the teachers' doghouse. After realizing how much used slate was available and how much he could resell it for in the Boston and Philadelphia markets, his teacher had Brian scouring every corner of the Vermont countryside for used slate. The supply of slate already on the ground began to dwindle. The next obvious source was to remove slate from old run down barns and farmhouses. It was here that Brian learned the art of slate roofing. In the process of taking the slate off these old structures, Brian saw how it had been put on. Every roof he removed revealed a few more secrets of slate roofing.
