Title

Westmoreland County Transit Authority

Description

The Westmoreland County Transit Authority was formed by the county commissioners in 1978 to combine service that was being provided by a number of private bus companies throughout the county. The original Westmoreland Transit office was located in the Westmoreland County courthouse and was managed by the Planning Department. Later, the Authority moved its office to North Main Street. In 1992, the current office and Transit Center located at 41 Bell Way was opened.

September 13, 1999 marked a milestone for public bus service in Westmoreland County. On this date, Westmoreland Transit began to operate a completely new system that involved a mass restructuring of all routes and fares. The project had been in planning for over a year. Some of its highlights included: improvements in frequency of service to Pittsburgh, more service to local colleges, additional commuter service for Greensburg area workers, and expanded evening and Saturday service.

Service expansion took place again in July 2005, with the addition of two commuter trips and extended service to the new Greengate Centre.
