Wet Ink : news

Description

Wet Ink is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to contemporary music. While we are primarily a composers collective and ensemble, we also function as a presenting organization in so far as we frequently feature the music of other composers and ensembles.

Since our founding in 1998, we have presented over 70 concerts that have featured a wide range of exceptional artists, both established and emerging. Some of the artists we have programmed include Christian Wolff, Joe Maneri, Fredric Rzewski, Salvatore Sciarrino, Tristan Murail, Philippe Hurel, Beat Furrer, David Shea, the Vega String Quartet, Charles Gayle, Douglas Repetto, the Argento Ensemble, Zs, Timetable Percussion and composers of the Wet Ink Collective, Alex Mincek, Reiko Fueting, Brendan Connelly, Eric Wubbels, Jeff Snyder and Sam Hillmer.

Our mission is to present innovative programs that allow the public to experience contemporary music in unique contexts, while providing composers and performers a platform for their work. With strong ties to several New York arts communities - uptown and downtown new music, experimental theater, jazz, punk rock - Wet Ink is able to present engaging programs from the real frontier of new music with a kind of energy and authenticity rarely found elsewhere. Our artistic vision is to explore the many definitions of the term "new music" and to call into question the traditional notion of "high" versus "low" art, by creating music and programs that link many of these different arts communities. We believe, for instance, there is an unnecessary friction between composition-based and improvisational music. The same can be said of other disparate traditions-the orchestra and the rock band, or the homemade instrument and the computer.
