Title

Wine Sense - A Sensual Guide to Wine and Wine Tasting

Description

Paul White is a wine writer, judge and buyer. Since 1987 Paul has tasted about 2-3,000 wines annually from all over the world. Although born in the USA, he developed an international perspective from long periods of time spent living in other cultures: United Kingdom, Holland, Canada and, currently, New Zealand. His interest is in wine as it is produced in all its variations throughout both the New and Old Worlds.

His initial introduction to wine in the 1960s and 70s followed the growth of several pioneering 'New World' wine regions along the West Coast of North America (California, Oregon, and Washington State). These regions developed the 'New World' concepts of 100% varietal wines, a seeking out of progressively 'cooler' climates, and a belief that rules were made to be broken so new wine styles could be established.

Later, in the 1980s he worked in Europe as a classical music performer, musical instrument builder, music historian and museum curator, and eventually completed a Doctor of Philosophy Degree at Oxford University. While at Oxford he captained the world's oldest competitive tasting team, Oxford University Blind Wine Tasting Team and organised the University's wine education society, The Wine Circle. Oxford (and the wine cellars of its 30-odd colleges) provided a unique opportunity to study carefully cellared 'Old World' wine and come to terms with the 'Classic' styles and regions of Europe through a British perspective.
