Yapp Brothers was started thirty-five years ago by Robin Yapp, then a full-time dentist. In 1969 Robin realised that, apart from the obvious choices – such as Muscadet and Sancerre from the Loire and Châteauneuf du Pape and Hermitage from the Rhône – the British Wine Trade was largely ignoring the wonderful and varied wines being made in extensive viticultural regions. Full of enthusiasm and armed with a small blue Collins’ Dictionary, Robin sourced the finest possible versions of obscure and esoteric rarities, such as Reuilly, Menetou Salon, Thouarsais and Jasnières in the Loire, and Condrieu, Tricastin, Saint Péray, Brézème and Gigondas (incredibly, then still virtually unknown) in the Rhône: most of them being wines that had never ever before been shipped to Britain.
