YOLK Generasian Next

Description

Receiving a complete makeover in 2001, YOLK Version 2.0--dubbed "The (Re)Birth" issue--was unleashed with its sights set on becoming the definitive Asian American entertainment, lifestyle, and pop culture magazine. With a bold, provocative, and controversial new look and format, YOLK would set a new standard for Asian American print media over the next two-and-a-half years.

In 1994, since YOLK featured Margaret Cho on the cover of its inagural issue, the magazine hit the ground running and provided a much-needed outlet for young Asian Americans in general. Over the next few years, YOLK struggled, yet survived with a minimal budget. By the end of 2000, the decision was made to revamp the magazine and update it into a more contemporary journal, focusing on Asian Americans in media, leaving most of the political and other content for its few peers to cover.

The response was mostly positive, yet the budgets stayed small due to those in charge of advertising dollars being up in arms as to what to do with the Asian American audience--remarkably, one of the most lucrative in recent history. Thus, YOLK had to shut down in late 2003. For posterity, this website serves as a reminder of what was YOLK 2.0: fifteen jam-packed issues, the end of a beginning for Asian American print media. Enjoy.
