This is a U-axis head which allows the machine to function as a lathe on parts that cannot be fixtured into a lathe. We can bore tapers and large diameters more economically than conventional methods. We can also do spherical bores with these heads. Three of our Niigata HN80D machines are equipped with these heads and the fourth machine will also have this capability soon. This gives them much greater flexibility than conventional horizontal machining centers.
