The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is an internationally organized non-profit corporation located in Marina Del Rey, CA.

Dedicated to:

  • Preserving the operational stability of the Internet
  • Promoting competition
  • Achieving broad representation of global Internet communities
  • Developing policy appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.

While they offer a number of functions and services, most notably ICANN is responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses, including generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and country code Top-Level Domains (this includes ccTLDs & gTLDs).

  • The introduction of new generic top-level domains
  • Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation
  • Protocol identifier assignment
