ICANN
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is an internationally organized non-profit corporation located in Marina Del Rey, CA.
Dedicated to:
- Preserving the operational stability of the Internet
- Promoting competition
- Achieving broad representation of global Internet communities
- Developing policy appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.
While they offer a number of functions and services, most notably ICANN is responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses, including generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and country code Top-Level Domains (this includes ccTLDs & gTLDs).
Other ICANN functions
ICANN does help with a number of other functions:
- The introduction of new generic top-level domains
- Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation
- Protocol identifier assignment
- Root server system management functions.
- Defining policy as it pertains to other ICANN functions
- Redemption Grace Periods for Deleted Names
