Mininova.org - The Bit Torrent Download Source

Logo-mininova-org.png
Mininova.org is amongst some of the biggest torrent listing sites. The site was launched as a successor of SuperNova in January 2005. SuperNova was a very popular torrent listing site of its time but unfortunately it went offline in 2004 due to some legal proceedings taken against it. Mininova.org can be defined as a directory or a search engine to find various types of torrent files. Visitors or the users of Mininova.org can also upload any particular torrent to Mininova.org and these can be tracked by any bit torrent tracker. However pornographic submissions are not allowed on Mininova.org and no logs are maintained regarding the IP Addresses of the visitors. In October this year, there were about 159000 torrents available for download at Mininova.org.

The owner of Mininova.org is Niek Van Der Maas Wethouder Teselinglaan 10a 3972GB, Driebergen-Rijsenburg from the Netherlands, Phone +31877843530

Some of the torrents provide links to copyright protected files and thus are considered to be illegal in various countries like USA. In “The Google’s List of most Queried Terms” issued in 2006, Mininova was ranked 9. Mininova.org is related to Bit Torrent which is a p2p protocol generally used for the purpose of distributing large files. Following are the features or benefits provided to its visitors by Mininova.org:

  1. Other visitors or users can see which files have been uploaded by a particular user. However the user who uploads the file also has the option to turn this feature off.
  2. This site also provides a forum where people can give comments regarding the torrents available on Mininova.org.
  3. Users can even personalize Mininova according to their preferences.

The site also welcomes different suggestions or ideas which its visitors want to give. Users can contact the administrators at staff@mininova.com and provide their suggestions and valuable feedback. Mininova.org also provides RSS feed to the users in order to stay up to date with the site. However the users require an RSS reader to read the RSS feed. One way of doing this is using Mozilla Firefox. The feed can be read by clicking the RSS icon present at the bottom right corner of the Mozilla browser. The newsfeeds will get automatically subscribed by clicking the link http://www.mininova.org/rss.xml only if the users are using Opera. Users using any other browsers apart from Mozilla Firefox and Opera would be required to download a reader which is capable of reading the RSS feed. Users can also customize the RSS feed by using the URL scheme like:

http://www.mininova.org/rss.xml?cat=15&num=100

Where the number 15 depicts the category and 100 depicts the number of results a user wants. In place of “cat” you can also use “sub” which means subcategory.

In order to protect the privacy of its visitors Mininova.org dose not log their IP Addresses or their hostnames. But Mininova.org can log the IP Addresses of certain up loaders if the administrators feel that they are uploading spam torrents. Visitors can anonymously upload torrents at Mininova.org and no login is necessary. When one visits Mininova.org he can find various advertisements of MaxOnline and other similar advertising companies. These advertising companies can use the information about the users at Mininova.org other than their names, addresses and telephone numbers in order to place specific advertisements at Mininova.org that might be useful for them.

Mininova.org is written in PHP script by its administrators and it does not have any templates and other such things as they make the site heavy. Currently Mininova.org is using three web servers, two database servers, 2 search servers and one load balancer. There are also three more servers for other services like forum, ads and blog. At present Mininova.org is using LightTPD as its web server because it performs better than Apache. In order to cache the compiled PHP scripts and other blocks of HTML, Mininova.org makes good use of eAccelerator. Mininova.org also uses MySQL for storing its database because it is available for free and also gives good performance.

At last, it can be concluded that the sole aim of Mininova.org is to provide a search engine for various torrent files which users can use without much difficulty. Mininova.org wants to keep their domain free from unwanted material and thus any adult submissions are prohibited.

Mininova.com Scam

Unfortunately for Mininova.org (and users who've been duped), another site has squatted the domain name Mininova.com. Apparently, they've put up an interface asking for paid membership and then pipe search results from Mininova.org to users who've been fooled.
