HP.com is the internet homepage of the computer and technology corporation Hewlett-Packard. Hewlett-Packard, usually known as HP, is the world's largest IT company, just ahead of IBM.

HP is based in Palo Alto, California, United States. The primary products they are known for are their personal computers and printers. HP's posted annual revenue in 2006 was $91.7 billion, just $300 million ahead of IBM, the world's second largest IT company.

History

Hewlett-Packard was formed on January 1, 1939 as a partnership between Stanford graduates Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. The name was chosen after a coin flip to determine whose name came first.

HP was a diverse electronics company for the first decades of its existence. HP's main products until the early 1990's were voltmeters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and other testing equipment.

HP was able distinguish themselves in the marketplace and they gained a reputation for producing equipment that outperformed their competitors in both range and accuracy. This reputation was not an accident, either. HP's engineers were strongly focused on finding ways to push the limits of what was thought possible.

HP joined the computer market in 1966 with the introduction of the HP 2100 / HP 1000 minicomputer series. This series would last for 20 years, despite several attempts to replace it.

In 1968, HP created the world's first personal computer – the HP 9100A. They called it a desktop calculator, though, because it did not meet people's pre-conceived notions about what a computer should look like! Throughout the 1970's HP continued to innovate, with the introduction of the first hand-held scientific calculator, the first hand-held programmable calculator, and the first programmable, expandable, alphanumerical calculator.

The 80's didn't find HP twiddling their thumbs either. HP created inkjet and laser printers for desktops. In the 1990's, HP began expanding their product line to offer computers, printers and IT products to home users. (Up until then, HP had targeted scientific, research, and business communities.) After targeting the consumer market, Hp quickly became a major player, and is now the world's number one seller of computers.
