Description

Excerpted from the website description:

When buying a katana sword there are a few things you should ask yourself: whether you want the sword just for decorative purposes, or do you instead want a training sword, or battle ready sharp katana.

It is recommended that you buy a battle ready sword rather than a simple, usually stainless steel decorative sword. Although stainless steel is fine when it comes to knives or other blades, it is far better if your katana sword is made of folded steel or carbon forged steel. You should also check if your battle ready sword is a full tang sword, which means that the entire handle of the sword is the tang and the handle scales are attached to the sides. A full tang sword is much more sturdy and more durable. And, you can always use a battle-ready sword as a decorative sword also.

If price is not an issue, you might want to consider buying an authentic or unique katana sword. It will be worth it. But note that such quality japanese swords require some care and maintenance.

Whether you choose a quality sword or just a wall-hanger, it will certainly be a great decoration to your home of office.

Additional Information

History of Japanese swords goes back 2.000 years. The first metal sword was discovered from a grave in Japan. The oldest sword is called Jo-ko-gatana. Swords with blades on both sides are known as ken or tsurugi, and the ones with a single blade as tachi.

From the 3rd to the 8th century, Chinease and Korean sword craftsmen came over to Japan. Ken (ryo-to-ken) were made during the 7th to the 8th period. Tachi developed into a katana during the middle of the 10th century, because the Japanese horseman required weapons suitable for surprise attacks.

Blacksmith techniques were at its finest during the year 1190 to 1337 (Kamakura period), thus many of the swords valuable as national treasures were made during this period. Read more about katana sword history
