wikia

Great comment on the ConcernsPage regarding Wikia.org and AboutUs.org. This seems like a bug for both sides, and not just when working with each other. peace, TedErnst

Response

Thanks TedErnst. I write these comments from time to time and I never know if people find my ideas useful so it is good to get some feedback. This is a problem for Wikia as people may try to put "WWW" in either because a process is automated or because of human error. Inexperienced internet users may try to make sure there is a WWW in every url they type.

There is a problem with subdomains generally in that some sudmains such as http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/ require the WWW and won't work without it while others such as http://careerjunction.50webs.com/ will not work with the WWW.

Some subdomains work with or without the "WWW" such as http://www.scotland.stvaction.org.uk/ - http://scotland.stvaction.org.uk/.

It would appear that people who have signed up for free hosting are most likely to be affected such as 50Webs.com and UK.Geocities.com. If anyone wanted to create a page for a MySpace group (example http://groups.myspace.com/KeepTheWorldAlive) they would have the same problem. The problem may also affect students who are given webspace by their college/university.

yes

I agree on all counts. AboutUs.org needs to address this. I know this issue is on an index card as a UserStory. TedErnst

Country Codes

Hi John, I think country codes could be really cool. I am not 100% sure how they would be used, but I encourage you to start building with them and I will watch and ask questions! Aside, I added a category to your PersonalPage - please revert if it doesn't feel right. If it does, please come over and check out the work on the AdultContentPolicy. Best, MarkDilley

Response

Hi Mark, I have had a look and made a few minor changes. For a second I thought I had held the whole prcoess up by restartig the Donetimer. Then I read all the rules and realised that more staff have to vote "Yes" before the timer even starts. Category you have added is fine and if I ever become inactive please can someone remove it.

John Cross 13:31, 29 April 2007 (PDT)

Yes, not a problem on the category. We would want to do that also. Still thinking about what makes someone active and what would make them inactive :-) Still interested in a tour? Best, MarkDilley

Featured Nomination for STVAction.org.uk

John, just saw your nomination for STVAction.org.uk as a featured WikiPage I think with some minor work this could be a great and timely page to feature. Just left a few notes on the Discussion page for the nomination. Keep me posted on any changes/polishes to the page so we can push this through the nomination process and try to get it featured ASAP. -- TakKendrick

cool

Hi John, saw that you helped out a bit over at RCC2007, :-D - also followed the link to your home page and saw your interest in unions.. very cool. Look forward to working more with you. Best, MarkDilley

Nice work trying to get Wikia.com to make sure www. works with their subdomains. We are also working on the ability to determain someone canonical address, whether it is www. or not and being able to send traffic to the preffered address. Coming at the problem both ways makes the most sense! Best, MarkDilley

Featured Page

John, we just featured STVAction.org.uk in time for the Scottish elections. Thanks again for all the great work building that WikiPage. I ended up moving the site map section down a little, there was a bit of chaos happening with all those images (site map, logo, thumbnail, Scottish STV logo) on my monitor and thought it was the best solution. But, if you don't like it there, feel free to move it back. -- TakCaricatureSm.jpg TakKendrick | Talk

AdultContentPolicy

John, your participating in creating the AboutUs AdultContentPolicy helps us build a stronger community. A lot of progress has been made and we have reached our GoThresholds. We are thrilled at the start of the 48 hour DoneTimer.

This means you should return to the AdultContentPolicy and review any changes that may have been made since you last saw it.

  • If you still approve of the policy, no action is needed.
  • If you are unhappy with the policy as is stands you will need to make a change to it soon.

Any edit will reset the DoneTimer. (this is ok as it is part of the process)

This is a critical time for the success of the new AdultContentPolicy. Your continued participation is needed to make sure we make the best decision we possibly can make right now. Please do advocate for the best possible policy!

Best,

MarkDilley

WhoWeAre

Hi,

I would just like to tell you about the WhoWeAre consensus poll. This is a unique opportunity for all community members to discuss and decide what AboutUs is and more importantly what role we, the community, plays.

The discussion is still in its initial stages and there are a handful of people involved in this discussion. But it's not enough. Every one of us has a stake in this process. We all need to air our views. Our opinions will make a difference. We cannot and must not let a handful of people define us. We must speak out and contribute because we are being defined and I for one would like to have a say in how I am being defined.

Please contribute to this really important project. Without you it cannot successfully create a good definition of who we are. Tanwir Shah

NewSkin Beta Preview

Hello John!

We've noticed your contributions and are glad to be on the AboutUs team with you! As an ActiveMember your energy and ideas determine our future direction. One way that ActiveMembers stay "in the loop" is to participate in the beta previews of large new changes to the site before they are generally released.

Today we're starting a limited beta preview of an earthy NewSkin intended to reflect the alive and growing AboutUs community. The NewSkin is designed to feel wholesome and connected with the real world. This choice was made to reassure the many folks who feel that the internet is a "scary place" where mean people hide behind fake identities and shout insults at each other. We hope that the NewSkin evokes our values in a way that helps visitors and members alike feel grounded in true community.

We'd love your help putting the NewSkin through its paces! To give it a whirl you'll need to be logged in. Once you are logged in, go to "my preferences" | "skin" and select "design". Don't forget to then click the "save" button! You can always go back to the current skin by selecting "aboutus" via the same steps.

Your feedback on the new look for aboutus will help ensure that it has a maximally positive impact when we roll it out. Thanks for being a valuable member of the community, we look forward to your feedback on the NewSkin page!

Warm Regards,
the DevelopmentTeam
